“The Chimney Sweeper” by William Blake [w/ Audio]

A little black thing among the snow,
Crying ''weep! 'weep!' in notes of woe!
'Where are thy father & mother? say?'
'They are both gone up to the church to pray.

'Because I was happy upon the heath,
'And smil'd among the winter's snow,
'They cloth'd me in the clothes of death,
'And taught me to sing the notes of woe.

'And because I am happy & dance & sing,
'They think they have done me no injury,
'And are gone to praise God & his Priest & King,
'Who make up a heaven of our misery.'

Dusky Winter Scene [Haiku]

church at dusk
looks shuttered and vacant, then
door creak, candle flame

Bone Cold [Haiku]

milky moonlight
pulls heat from bone:
winter night.

Buffeted [Haiku]

wind buffeted:
the coast is vibrant green
but wintery cold.

Cold River [Haiku]

goose at water's edge:
cold river flows around
unmoving legs.

Spring Snow [Haiku]

"snow? in mid-Spring!"
its stay is short, but is felt
in the porter's bones.

Cold Stream [Haiku]

Spring flows:
frigid and silt gray --
rush down the mountain.

Melancholia [Haiku]

beach in winter:
fully clothed walkers shrug
against a cold breeze.

Cold Mountain [Haiku]

cold mountain:
sound of falling water
iced to silence.

Winter Sky Fire [Haiku]

the sky is afire,
and, yet, i can see my breath
 on chill winter air.
