What do you love about where you live?

It continues to offer daily learning opportunities. Plus, the people are friendly and the climate is quite good.

Late Autumn [Haiku]

late Autumn:
the last few leaves
refuse to fall.

Wen Fu 12 [文赋十二] “Idiosyncrasy” by Lu Ji [陆机] [w/ Audio]

Thoughts conveyed by way of short verse
May degrade in eccentricity.
With bowed head, lonely and friendless.
Face up, vast sky where all is free.
Like one string stretched to perfect pitch,
But lacking all resonancy.

NOTES: Earlier I posted a translation by Tony Barnstone and Chou Ping, entitled A One-String Harp that was contained in The Art of Writing (Boston: Shambhala; p. 15) This, however, is my own translation. The original poem in Simplified Chinese is:

或讬言于短韵,对穷迹而孤兴。
俯寂寞而无友,仰寥廓而莫承。
譬偏弦之独张,含清唱而靡应。

PROMPT: Positive Emotion

Daily writing prompt
What positive emotion do you feel most often?

Curiosity. I exist in a state of perpetual perplexity. For example, is curiosity an emotion? If so, is it a positive one? I know it includes a feeling that drives me to make a decision or take an action, which would be an emotion by definition. But I don’t see it on a list of emotions. I consider it positive, but I also try to avoid putting value judgements on all things. Maybe it’s neutral. Can an emotion be neutral?…

The Goat [Lyric Poem]

There once was an adolescent goat
Who'd put anything straight down its throat:
It ate twigs and tires and old barbed wire,
And even once a deep fat fryer.

Stone Monolith [Haiku]

stone monolith
rises above the jungle
like a fortress.

“Bantams in Pine-Woods” by Wallace Stevens [w/ Audio]

Chieftain Iffucan of Azcan in caftan
Of tan with henna hackles, halt!

Damned universal cock, as if the sun
Was blackamoor to bear your blazing tail.

Fat! Fat! Fat! Fat! I am the personal.
Your world is you. I am my world.

You ten-foot poet among inchlings. Fat!
Begone! An inchling bristles in these pines,

Bristles, and points their Appalachian tangs,
And fears not portly Azcan nor his hoos.

PROMPT: Plan

Daily writing prompt
How do you plan your goals?

Haphazardly with a side of slapdashery.
