Stumped [Free Verse]

Photo taken on the Butch Kennedy Hiking Trail near Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.
A stump in the forest
is like a gap in a
wedding party photo
where they photoshopped
out a renegade relative,
but forgot to erase
the person's loafers.

The Industrial Disease [Lyric Poem]

The runs of an old mill at Vickery Creek Park in Atlanta.
I heard the last gasp and wheeze
of Industry's fatal disease.
Why would we need any workers?
We don't need factories!
We'll grow it all from nanobots
in a closet where you please.
There'll be a 3-D printer, printing
printers endlessly.
You won't hear another mention
of Industrial Disease.
The question is not how or where
to make it, that'll be a breeze.
The question on economist's minds...
that strains their expertise.
Is how will slobs who have no jobs
pay for their indices?

River Fog [Haiku]

Winter mornings:
fog forms on the river --
moments numbered.
Fog on the Mississippi River in New Orleans.

Quiet Bayou [Haiku]

Taken in the Pearl River bayou near Slidell, Louisiana.
quiet bayou:
the odd bird flutters
limb to lonely limb.

The Deeps [Lyric Poem]

Big Creek in Vickery Creek Park, Atlanta.
A jutting rock
splits the river,
diverging streams
never wither,
but speed around --
smoothly flowing,
still gaining speed --
never slowing,
until they reach
the deeps.

Winter Wetlands [Haiku]

A photograph taken in Van de Graaff Park near the Tuscaloosa, Alabama airport.
ducks drift
on frigid waters
in Winter wetlands.

Winter Stripe [Haiku]

A photograph of the woods in Winter in Paces Mill National Park, Atlanta.
low Winter sun
stripes the forest floor
with long shadows.

Bobbing Ducks [Haiku]

Ducks at the edge of a pond at Audubon Park in New Orleans.
ducks jump off a ledge,
bobbing once in pond water,
and drift onward.

Ignorance is Bliss [Lyric Poem]

A turtle swims to water's edge,
and finds before him a steep bluff.
He makes himself a solemn pledge,
"I'll scale this cliff, however tough!"
Struggling over the toilsome rim,
he sees another wall of stone
stands just ahead - tormenting him.
"Just one more, I'll not piss and moan."
If he could know that it was stairs,
He'd have some turtle curse words to share.

Soggy [Haiku]

Fallen leaves on the sidewalk after a rain.
fallen leaves, post-rain:
gauge the drizzle by
what crunch remains.
