Cabin [Haiku]

cabin in the woods
is grown over and into --
forest digested

Haunted Forest [Tanka]

trees stand straight
in the woods they call "haunted;"
all i see are trees,
but maybe they're ghost trees
and I see nothing at all

The Forest [Free Verse]

A sprout sprouts from the dirt.

Above, dead leaves keep
the tender leaf cool & moist.

Below, worms churn the soil --
churn and aerate.

Fungi decompose the lowest leaf layer,
turning it into nutrients for the sprout.

I'm tapped into all that magic
from afar:

-creation & destruction,
feeding into each other

-energy becoming life,
life becoming matter,
matter that -
in turn -
becomes energy.

If there's a forest,
I am the forest.
I'm life and energy
&
 death and decomposition...

all in due time.

Long Shadows [Haiku]

striped mountain —
long shadows lie across
the forest floor

Grassy Plain [Haiku]

the forest brightens
and i stumble out onto
a grassy plain

Cabin [Haiku]

deep in the woods,
a weather-beaten cabin
slants slightly

Walk in the Woods [Tanka]

sunlight shines low,
half-hatching the forest floor
with autumn shadows;
i walk amid columns,
listening for absent birds

Life Amid a Winter Scene [Haibun]

The forest is silent, and winter has painted the woods in earthen hues. Bare black loam is spottily strewn with beige to brown leaves -- dried to a curl and crunch that's almost crumbling. If any animals are moving, it's only at the eyes. There're no skittering feet, no frantic digging, no chirped warnings, and no explosive attempts to flee.

Then, at the base of a downed log, there's a lively scene of vibrant green moss and tender, burnished-orange fungi caps.

winter forest --
all seems dead or dormant,
but one tender scene
