PROMPT: Creative

How are you creative?

By nudging letters into words, words into lines, and then dancing the mess into something that sings. By trying to tune into the Great Spontaneous.

PROMPT: Birth Year

Share what you know about the year you were born.

Wow. Not a lot. The war in Vietnam was in full swing, and Nixon was in the White House, but nothing else springs to mind. Over the years, I’ve looked it up, including the big books and films of the year, but it’s all utterly unrememberable. It hasn’t been long since I looked up what film won the Oscar, and I forgot it — something that no one but film school students and niche art historians are aware of today. (i.e. Nothing that shows up on your Netflix “Classic Films” feed.)

PROMPT: Character

Are you a good judge of character?

I’m good at judging who IS a character, but probably not so much a judge of who HAS character. People are demonstrably overestimative of their ability to draw conclusions about other people’s internal characteristics. (I cite as an example that study about interview subjects asked to hold either warm or cold coffee in the hand they would use to shake interviewer’s hands.) So, I’m probably better than people who think they are good at it, while still not being good at it.

PROMPT: Happy

When are you most happy?

When I allow myself to be. Hope you weren’t looking for an answer like, “Wednesdays between 4 and 7 pm.”

PROMPT: Fun

What was the last thing you did for play or fun?

Snacking tour at a night market.

PROMPT: Grocery Items

List your top 5 grocery store items.

I’m guessing, by mass: melon, carrots, milk, rice, and onions — in unknown order.

PROMPT: Skills

Daily writing prompt
What skills or lessons have you learned recently?

I’ve been learning to juggle. It’s an excellent skill because you have to fail a million times before you can be successful, and you can’t partially fail or fail in a controlled fashion. It’s kind of all or nothing. So, it teaches persistence and to be less prone to becoming demoralized. It also teaches one a lot about how one’s mind works at the speed of instinct.

PROMPT: Cities

Daily writing prompt
What cities do you want to visit?

As many as I can, but I guess the top ten list (of cities I haven’t been to) would be: Kyoto, Guilin, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Zanzibar, Lhasa, Santiago, and Havana. [Not necessarily in order.]

PROMPT: People Say

Daily writing prompt
Tell us one thing you hope people say about you.
There is nothing that I hope everyone would say about me. I would wish friends to say, "He's tolerable in the right dose." I would wish my enemies to say "He's a mean sonofabitch." I would wish those who don't know me to keep their mouths' shut about me. I would hope salesmen and missionaries would say, "He's the kind of guy whose door is not worth knocking on."

PROMPT: Admiration

What is something others do that sparks your admiration?

Give anonymously and without expectation of having something named after them or gaining publicity.
