PROMPT: Unwind

Daily writing prompt
How do you unwind after a demanding day?

I’ve heard it said that it’s kind to rewind, but everyone who’s said that is quite old.

But I just lie on my back and contemplate the ceiling.

PROMPT: 5 Everyday Things

Daily writing prompt
What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

A breath of air when I’m suffocating.

A drink of water when I’m thirsty.

A bit of bread when I’m hungry.

Sleep when I’m weary.

Company when I’m lonely.

24/7 Wakeup Call [Lyric Poem]

Photograph taken from Wat Pa Phon Phoa at Luang Prabang, Laos.
In a mountain village,
the roosters crow all day.
Hopes of mid-day napping
are dashed along the way.

PROMPT: Night or Morning

Daily writing prompt
Are you more of a night or morning person?

Morning. Whether I want to be or not.

PROMPT: Lazy Days

Do lazy days make you feel rested or unproductive?

Rested. Like Mondays, they never get me down. [Or is that “rainy days?”]

PROMPT: Relax

Daily writing prompt
How do you relax?

Tai Chi, Chai Tea, the usual suspects.

Happy Hour [Lyric Poem]

The valley stretches in such a way
that it gets sun but one hour a day.
That Happy Hour when the sun aligns
upon dewy grass and deep green pines.
The local villagers, they all know
when they should come and when they should go.
But that Happy Hour is not for either.
It's to face the sun and take a breather.

PROMPT: Sleepless

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

Probably the same stuff. I’m reminded of Parkinson’s Law that states that activities [ie work] expand to fill the time allotted. Plus, there would still be mental housekeeping tasks to be done. It’s not like sleep is just wasted time (contrary to popular belief.) There is a great deal of important stuff that gets done in body and brain during sleep. If you think your memory is bad now…

So, if it’s all the same to you, I think I’ll keep my sleep. I don’t think it’ll make the slightest difference in losing work to AI. (John Henry folklore notwithstanding.)

PROMPT: Lazy Days

Daily writing prompt
Do lazy days make you feel rested or unproductive?

Rested. Definitely. I believe one has to think of rest and recovery as part of the process of living. If one thinks of it as just wasting time between “doing things,” then one isn’t going to get the most out of body and mind.

PROMPT: Well-Being

Daily writing prompt
What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

Diet: high fiber / low junk

Movement: frequent and varied (includes: yoga, calisthenics, running, swimming, and functional movement)

Mental: breathwork, yogic dispassionate witnessing, and gratitude awareness

Rest: Build in regular and redundant rest throughout the living process
