Apocalypse, Soon [Sonnet]

When time stopped behaving, I should have known
that war was coming - perhaps, something worse.
Those who saw themselves sinless grabbed their stones,
and started chanting bile -- their wicked curse.

The hopeless cried with wide eyes, but in vain
as they were huddled around burning fires.
The best of us opted to go insane,
and build crude armor from old belts and tires.

We'd flank a castle that did not exist
like Don Quixote, tilting at windmills.
Better to charge a false monster and miss
than to have Folly chase one to the hills.

Who says it's worse to slouch to lunacy
than suffer the world's fury lucidly?

Bonsai [Haiku]

a potted bonsai --
twisted, knobbed, and deformed --
stony mountain mind

Retort to “Arise, fair sun…” [Poem]

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

Romeo & juliet: act 2, scene 2

Oh, moon, slip cautiously across the night.
They whispered to the sun to murder you.
So, slink way down before the sun takes flight,
'fore that proud body can make much ado.

Trotting Bull [Haiku]

the bull starts to trot
down the middle of the road,
and the road clears

Cambridge Limerick

There was an outlandish student of Cambridge
who only had space for the tiniest fridge.
It all had to go -
milk and meat in the snow.
Turns out he liked his gin chilled just a smidge.

Bishkek Limerick

There was a diligent soldier from Bishkek
whose boots never saw as much as a speck,
but marching to the flagpole
he showed scuffs on the sole,
and the Sergeant said, "Your uniform 's a wreck!"

One Rumpled Flower [Haiku]

one flower
stands, rumpled & in the rear,
but is just as bright

Sunlit Whitewater [Haiku]

the river churns;
lit by the mid-day sun --
its foam glows

Jacob’s Ladder [Free Verse]

I'm dripping into midnight --
my world has disappeared.

My eyes crack to light and life,
but I forgot to hear --
remembering,
the silence is broken
& I hear a rhythmic clack.

But I can't help but wonder,
where it is that I'm at?

I'm at the bottom of a wooden staircase,
too steep to be sound,
looking up until perspective
makes the case vanishingly thin.

Should I climb the staircase?

What else can I do?

Will I wake
half way up,
and find myself
in the blue?

The laws of dreams force my hand,
I can't stand paralyzed,
and I'm halfway to infinity
by means that I know not.

And I'm thinking of the line from that
children's prayer:
"If I should die before I 'wake,"
and I think:

"What the hell is wrong with parents?"
that's the thought upon which you're going
to leave with your child
to "go to sleep?"

And you're wondering why the
kid is up all night?

Because dying in one's sleep
doesn't start to seem
like a fine prospect
until one is an octogenarian.

And so I sleep...

Quick to Dead [Couplets]

I gasp in my last minute living loud,
I'd dreamt of being carried on a cloud.
But,
My body 's too heavy, my mind too light,
and nothing remains once I'm failed by sight.

Just a pile of death stacked before the door,
as carrion feeders squawk out for more.

In eternal darkness, that endless void,
I was once created, & now once destroyed.
