Dogs or cats?
I prefer either to humans, generally speaking. I prefer dogs when feeling the need for affection, but cats when I want my space. Since the latter is more often my state of being, I guess a slight edge to cats.

brashly slips through a window
in broad daylight.
its forelimbs crossed,
the dog looks "in the know,"
but what 's it know?
even by daylight,
the black cat is a shadow --
devoid of depth.
What animals make the best/worst pets?
BEST: Dogs (but house-cats if one is of a less energetic / more lazy persuasion.)
WORST: Hippopotamus / Rhinoceros tie

What are your favorite animals?
All the non-human ones are pretty awesome, and even the humans can be tolerable in the proper dosage.
