In Tall Grass [Free Verse]

Do you feel unease,
walking in tall grass?

Visceral tension?

A primal impression from a time
when a wounded beast
[on its belly, &
with labored breath]
retained enough energy
for one last lurch
to impale its hunter?

A raspy groan or bloody burble,
and the jerky wave of the grass
might be all the warning one got
before
The End.

All-Seeing Feline [Haiku]

a cat on a ledge
peers down with rapt focus.
looking for… what?

Bunny Blending In [Haiku]

the bunny is still,
believing itself unseen,
but those ears don't blend

Sky Spider [Haiku]

i look at the clouds,
and notice an Orb-weaver,
seemingly floating

Milky Moonlight [Haiku]

milky moonlight
paints all things pale --
all but the shadows

Storm Front [Free Verse]

Rain is coming.
I can smell its sweet whiff on the breeze.

A storm prowls out there
beyond my eyes power to see.

But dark clouds hunker in the fore:
the storm's vanguard.

The birds know it's coming.
They've vacated the skies
to...
I know not where.

Stowaway [Limerick]

There once was a mischievous macaque
with a knack for invading knapsacks.
When a zipper stuck,
'twas his terrible luck
to get locked in a trunk & run out of snacks.

Quick Peek [Kyōka]

a weaver
pokes its head from the nest,
looks both ways,
& decides to stay in.
i know the feeling.
