In Captivity [Free Verse]

bars at your back,

and their stripes
 permanently etched
  into one's field of vision.

so much so,
 that you feel they're
  a ubiquitous feature
   of the world beyond.

the cage should be a hated place,
but one can grow to love the cage.

the cage is shelter.

the cage is delivery address
 for food & water disbursements.

the cage forms rollbars --
like on a dune buggy --
   protection in the event
of a sudden & unexpected crash.

the cage offers one a range --
narrow as it might be --
of distances at which one's captor
   may be kept,

and, as long as the cage is shut,
 that gives one a delightful
  illusion of control.

what a hated place a cage should be,
and yet how conflicted are the captives?

Head in the Clouds [Haiku]

the Buddha's head
is in blue sky - ringed by clouds,
  or so it seems.

Green Pond [Haiku]

the green pond
 reflects the green world
  in its own hue.

Still Eye [Haiku]

along the seashore,
 everything is in motion,
  but the crow's eye.

Cold Moon [Haiku]

full moon
over Fishtail Mountain-
breath swirls in cold air.

Why Words Matter (Even the Small Ones) [Senryū]

flip two letters
and prohibition becomes
invitation.

Elephantine March [Free Verse]

The herd is on the march.

They lumber with slow
      determination.

The young achieve
       playful swagger,
        but aren't allowed
         too wide of the line.

I wonder whether they're
       going someplace good?

Predator at Rest [Haiku]

from the shade
 of yonder trees,
  something watches.

Little Yellow Flowers [Haiku]

i look beyond,
 but see only the flowers
  in the foreground.

The Fall [Lyric Poem]

Rome fell,
     the Mongols & Ottomans, too.
 Great powers fall
     often sans much ado.

     [Psst! someday yours will, too.]

They can't help but crumble;
     the foundations get rot.
 And there's too much weight
     to bear, without spurring plots.

Plots and schemes and pandering,
     all throughout the State.
Forget those Barbarians, the threat 's
     inside the gates.
