Cold River [Haiku]

goose at water's edge:
cold river flows around
unmoving legs.

Ibis [Lyric Poem]

The Egyptians found the Ibis sacred.
This must have made the Ibis elated.
I watched one try to push a Heron around;
The unimpressed Heron just stood its ground.

Goose [Lyric Poem]

There's a goose, a goose on the loose!
They scare me, though we have a truce.
The meanest bird you'll find in the park,
I bet they started shit on that Ark.

Pigeons [Lyric Poem]

There’s a writhing pile of pigeons —
Not two or a few or a smidgen —
You can raise their clout, and call them doves,
But I’m glad they're not on the wires above.

Home Invasion [Haiku]

the heron stares at
the unwitting egret’s back:
unfond of flatmate?

Vista Tree [Haiku]

a tree looms
over the valley;
beloved of hawks.

Downpour [Haiku]

drying cormorant
folds up its wings, resigned
to grounding by rain.

Starling [Haiku]

a starling stomps,
like a masked bandit,
across dusty earth.

Rocky Outcrop [Tanka]

the rocky tip
of grass-coiffed outcrop
is all I see,
but the sound of a crow's "CAW!"
comes through loud & clear.
