The Bell, Unrung [Free Verse]

the big, brass bell
 hasn't rung in years

the stiffest storm winds
  can't budge it

it stands with clamorous
  potential -- unrung

Mongoose Crossing [Free Verse]

A mongoose crosses the road.
My mind makes it Rikki Tikki Tavi.

Is there a cobra in the tall grass?
 Is this a heroic mongoose?

The mongoose disappears from sight,
and I'm left with no answers.

Music Appreciation [Free Verse]

Not by hearing or listening,
     but by feeling the rhythm,
body / mind resonating to it,
     being effortlessly attuned to it:

That is how the music transports one --
            how it changes one's mind.

Hawk Bank [Haiku]

the hawk swoops & banks;
i feel its flapping wings
as it passes.

Winged Deception [Haiku]

the butterfly
that i’d thought dead
just fluttered off.

The City Sees [Free Verse]

The city sees like Santa Claus.

Every misdeed is captured.

Every lost soul is whereabouts known --
   known but not shared.

The city sees all,
    but it does keep secrets...

    sometimes.

Cloud Ceiling [Haiku]

cloud touches hill
as if it's resting on it.
  smell of spring rains.

Midsummer Masquerade [Haiku]

rainy summer day
 masquerades as early spring,
  while noon plays dusk.

Coastal Wetlands [Haiku]

those flat wetlands
 might stretch out for miles,
  or, maybe, inches?

Traveling Salesman Limerick

A man who sold marital aids door to door
heard from a husband in an uproar.
   "An 'aid' for whom?
   It can't be the groom.
Your product has three speeds, so I now need four."
