the scent of death
assaults my nostrils: 
carcass or fungi?

a rotten log grows
a vibrant mushroom cluster —
soon to rot, itself

rotten log fungi
imitate oysters
on pier pilings

on a dead tree,
in the cocoa-colored flood:
coveted Reishi
