Hermit Time [Haiku]

cave hermit
can’t see farmers in fields, just
brown to green to tan.

Hermitage [Haiku]

hermit climbs the hill:
clouds mask his ascent,
obscure the cavemouth.

DAILY PHOTO: Cave Framed

The Cave [Free Verse]

Jagged window
on the world:
All light and sound
deadened,
but from one opening --
The cave mouth.

From behind
nothing stirs,
nothing glows,
shadows are subsumed
by shadow.

Eyes and mind
frame the cave mouth,
making the mind
a cave within a cave:
layered silence
layered remoteness,
and all input of a single,
common source.

How many caves deep might
this thing go?

Out of the Cave [Haiku]

up ahead,
 light washes into the cave,
  and I stagger out.

Covert Cave [Lyric Poem]

Do you know how deep the darkness goes?
 No. Chiaroscuro black conceals
all but what's divulged by echoes,
   and figments spastic minds reveal.

Cave Monster [Common Meter]

I sit within an empty cave.
   It's empty, that's for sure.
It's dark, so dark that nothing shines.
What sound is that? A purr?

I'm in this cave, and not alone,
but with what I can't say.
It's in the back where it's jet black --
   a predator? Or prey?

I'm walking now; I don't dare run.
   the ground is all cockeyed
 with stalagmites and stalactites.
I grope, in need of guide.

And feeling through Stygian space,
   I bust open my head.
Warm blood, I feel, run down my face.
   I'm squeezed by rising dread.

I hear a squeak, a mouse strolls through;
   then silence is restored.
If only my mind were so rid
   of its outsized horrors.
