On the arid
desert's edge,
Stands a scrubby
shrubby hedge
That's always green
and never brown,
But it turns black

a muscular tree
poses with limbs outstretched;
shrubs are unimpressed.

this odd little shrub
grows snails like seed pods:
or so it seems.

lopsided firethorn
remains unbowed despite
the weight of berries
