a stag beetle
 lifts pincers in warning;
  tender flesh at feet.

a bee hovers
 between two wildflowers,
  in a quandary.

a duck trio
 does a lazy do-si-do
  with eyes closed.

once stately mansion,
 weedy & paint peeling:
  entropy incarnate.

a shaft of sunlight
 sneaks past a blocking cloud:
  summer sunset.

bounded by city:
 look up to boundless sky,
  & the mind soars.

flowers dip
 under a bee’s weight, 
  but spring back.

frogs plop in water
 faster than my eye can see:
  a blur — kerplunk!

a mighty river 
 makes the mighty city
  dwarven by compare.

sun sets behind trees,
 hiding a city in woodland 
  silhouette.
