Tiger Riding for Beginners

for any deer pair, 
 there’s one cautious,
  & one obstinate.

bird at work:
 flitting branch to branch,
  seeking perfect seeds.

deer eyes walker.
 jumbo jets scream overhead,
  but it heard stick crack.

spider works its prey;
 its movement is beautiful.
  its spikes - less so.

cooter cranes its neck:
 impulse to know greater than
  impulse to shelter.

a stag beetle
 lifts pincers in warning;
  tender flesh at feet.

frogs plop in water
 faster than my eye can see:
  a blur — kerplunk!

this odd little shrub
 grows snails like seed pods:
  or so it seems.

twin butterflies 
 spiral around each other
  with spastic gravity.

diligent spider 
 works its catch
  into a meal.
