a deer walks,
 making less sound than 
  most squirrels.

a heron surveys 
 the gently flowing river
  with great patience.

behind the leaf, 
 a spider hides like a fat
  kid behind a pole.

one oak tree
 stands atop the hill:
  unstruck by lightning.

the treetop leaves
 that catch early & late sun
  are the first to fall.

sun shimmer
 in a dense patch looks like
  a sheet of ice.

a writhing dragon,
 is painted by the sunset
  in vivid colors.

shadowland edges, 
 and a liquid metal stripe:
  river sunset.

the floating leaf
 chooses its path around 
  the island
 by not choosing a path
  around the island.

tall grass sways
 beside the serene river
  one warm Fall day.
