What’s the most annoying trope in books or movies?
The McGuffin. A thing chased for the sake of being chased. It only works because humans, like dogs, are programmed to chase certain things without a good sense of whether it’s worth it or what would happen if one ever caught it.
Mine is both annoying and a guilty pleasure: the male character in a novel that you know the female protagonist is going to fall for because he’s described as more stereotypically masculine than the other men. More muscular forearms, deeper voice, blue collar job, rugged good looks, whatever. Then he turns out to be smarter/more intellectual and gentler/kinder than the others, once she gets to know him. Yet, somehow he managed to stay single until she came along.
