This was home to Prince Nikolaus Esterházy.

It’s located in a town called Fertőd that’s west of Budapest and southeast of Vienna. Taking a small detour, it’s on the way between Budapest and Vienna. One can team it with a trip to Sopron.

It has apparently been radically refurbished since this 17-year-old pic. They ditched the orange-yellow and toned down the monstrous bushes.

It gives one a nice little taste of lifestyles of the rich and famous–19th century style.

At which I attempted to learn the Hungarian language but was stymied by an excess of letters  per word and an occasional disconcerting lack of vowels.  (This is the main hall and wasn’t the building  in which I was taught. Our classes (the language summer school) were taught downtown in a teacher’s college building.)

The Szoborpark, or Momento Park, is an open-air collection of Budapest’s old Communist-era statues. Needless to say, these statues were not popular, and many were probably rapidly destroyed when the Soviet strangle hold waned. However, a collection of these Lenins, Stalins, and their Hungarian equivalents (e.g. Béla Kunremained. Furthermore, peppered into the collection were a few of images of the unknown “good soldier” and Stakhanovite workers, just to reinforce the notion that “all pigs are equal” (even if some are a little more so than others.) This one is the biggest of the lot. As I recall it stands about 2 stories high. The park is on the outskirts of town on the south side of the Buda (west) side of the Danube.
