Night in a River City [Haiku]

river city:
after dark, boats slip moorings
to glide silently.

  1. Pale Imitation

I try to be like Bernie Gourley, friends,
When haiku are the object of the quest.
I try to grasp the spirit that ascends
Through Zen perception. Oh, that spirit’s best!
But here, not for the first time, it’s confessed:
I can’t escape the Westerner within.
I’m nothing but a mere syllabic pest.
My insight into moments? Super thin.
Imitate Bernie Gourley for the win?
Yeah, sure. A great idea – if you can.
On that mimetic course I can’t begin.
    I ain’t that kind of always-mindful man.
Still, I’m aware that Bernie Gourley’s on it.
The best that I can manage is a sonnet.
