a brave youth
 plummets into the stepwell,
 all the while
 looking like she's on a stroll,
 blowing her nose and waving.

  Indeed. She was pretty high above the water and, stepwells taper downward with steps, so you’ve got to get some horizontal distance to not hit a stone step edge.
