Prickly Pear [Haiku]

a prickly pear patch
stands free of bird and beast;
i wonder why?

  1. Well, that poem tickled my curiosity so I did a little prickly digging.

    “Cactus plants such as prickly pear are food for various bird species, mammals, and insects. Many birds, lizards, mammals, insects, and bats rely on the flowers, fruits, and flesh of saguaro to survive in the desert. Some birds of prey and other ground animals make their nests in cactus.”

    The prickly pear may also offer protection from predators hunting smaller prey. Living among all those tiny spears is like being surrounded by an army of sentries.
