PROMPT: Name

Daily writing prompt
Where did your name come from?

Apparently, my [first] name is of French / West German origin and means “bear” “hard.” I’m sure it was chosen because it’s a saint’s name — actually several saints, most of whom were French and none – that I’m aware of – was Irish. This is interesting because my ancestral origins are primarily Irish on both sides, though my family name is apparently of Scottish origin. (I was aware some Scottish ancestry was in there, but didn’t know the name came from Scotland.)

  1. St Barbara – lots of legend, little historical facts: Apparently an early Christian-Greek woman who became a martyr. Her father locked her into a tower so she would not catch the Christian faith by being educated by missionaries. She was, however, inspired anyhow, by looking out of the window; patron saint of Artillery, mines; saint day Dec 4. I adopted the full name in my early thirties; as by birth baptism I was given a short form, which sounded to me as a diminutive.
