Ek Balam is a great site. It’s impressive, but it’s not thronged with tourists or hawkers–so you can get some clean pictures without being annoyed.
It’s not as easy to get to, but you can catch a cab from Valladolid. We went in the morning and had the place almost to ourselves. In the afternoon, I understand they sometimes get tourbuses.
